ACE Provision is run by Julie Smedley and Vicki Starkie. Julie and Vicki have worked in schools and alternative provisions for over 50 years between them that has led to a wealth of experience and expertise all of which are ideal qualities and skills to be able to support the children at ACE Provision.
Julie "I have always had a passion for supporting children that struggle in a mainstream classroom or setting. I started working for Bristol City Council (BCC) teaching BTEC sport in the south of the city and then moved into managing the alternative provision that BCC initiated to support children from all around Bristol, I was also the Designated teacher for children in care.
I then moved to a local secondary school to run their on-site alternative provision eventually taking responsibility for inclusion within the School. Over the many years of working with children I have been fortunate enough to be trained in counselling and I am a Thrive practitioner, this focuses on trauma led approaches in educational settings. I also have been the safeguard lead for secondary (DSL) for many years supporting complex cases, working with families, CAMHS and social workers."
Vicki "Having worked in mental health (both adult and child) and general hospitals I then trained to be a secondary school science teacher. I spent 20 enjoyable years teaching and leading various departments within school with a particular passion for science and the STEM (science, technology and maths) subjects.
I then moved into senior leadership and eventually became a Head teacher. I was trained as a DSL and Designated Teacher for children in care; I have also led on attendance and safeguarding and was a PGCE, NQT mentor and trainee social worker tutor. I also had the privileged of leading the South Bristol Head teachers meetings sharing ideas and working on contextual areas of improvement for children in the south."
